You don’t need a designer wardrobe, expensive shop fittings or a qualification in visual merchandising to create a fabulous-looking clothing stall.
Whether you’re selling clothes you’ve cleared out of your wardrobe or preparing for your first pre-loved fashion market, a little creativity makes a big difference. The secret? Make everything easy to see, easy to browse and irresistible to try on.
1. Make your clothes rail the star of the show
New to selling? Start with our guide to selling pre-loved clothes at a fashion market.
A good clothes rail is probably the hardest-working piece of equipment on your stall. Choose one that fits your allocated space and supports the weight of your stock. Group dresses, jackets, tops and trousers; use matching hangers if you can; and leave enough room to browse. Put standout pieces where they’ll catch the eye. Think inviting little boutique, not the final ten minutes of a jumble sale.
2. Arrange your clothes by colour
Grouping clothes by colour gives a mixed collection a more considered look. Try a rainbow, or smaller groups of neutrals, brights, prints and dark shades. Pair complementary colours and accessories together. You never know what combinations shoppers might discover.
3. Create different heights with boxes and baskets
A flat table is easily overlooked. Use sturdy wooden crates, decorative boxes, wicker baskets or low stands to vary the height of your display. Fold knitwear on a raised surface, give handbags a platform and put accessories in shallow baskets. Make sure everything is stable and safe. You might already own everything you need.
4. Give your best pieces pride of place
Have a fabulous vintage jacket, occasion dress or barely worn designer shoes? Don’t bury them in the rail. Pick two or three statement pieces and feature them prominently. A shopper may stop for the coat and discover three other items while browsing.
5. Use clear, attractive price signs
Nobody wants to ask the price of everything. Create legible signs such as ‘Tops from £5’, ‘Everything on this rail £5’ or ‘Three selected items for £12’, where those prices match what you’re selling. Label individually priced garments too. Simple printed signs in holders work perfectly well.
6. Add a mirror if you have room
A mirror helps shoppers check whether jackets, hats and accessories suit them. Choose a lightweight, ideally shatter-resistant option, secure it properly and check that the organiser permits it. Never obstruct a walkway.
7. Make a feature of bags, shoes and accessories
Keep scarves in neat baskets, jewellery in trays and handbags on small stands rather than hiding them under the table. Shoes can sit beneath the rail if they’re visible and don’t create a trip hazard. Show how a jacket, scarf and bag work together to inspire outfit ideas.
8. Create a bargain corner
A clearly labelled £3 basket or £5 rail draws attention, provided the contents really cost that amount. Keep bargains tidy and easy to browse. Affordable needn’t mean chaotic.
9. Add a little personality
A colourful tablecloth, framed sign, vintage suitcase or unusual basket can make your stall memorable. You don’t need to recreate a department store. Keep decorative touches proportionate, though: the clothing is still the attraction.
10. Think about how shoppers will move around your stall
Make sure your rail is easy to reach, prices visible and access clear. Don’t put spare boxes or bags in walkways. In a small space, bring fewer items onto the display and replenish from safely stored stock. Check the organiser’s rules on stall dimensions, furniture and loading.
Three easy stall layouts worth trying
The Mini Boutique: One rail with carefully chosen dresses and jackets, a small accessory table and a mirror where permitted. Best for a curated collection.
The Bargain Hunter’s Paradise: Group everyday clothing by size or type, with clearly signed price sections and a separate bargain basket.
The Vintage Treasure Trove: Combine statement pieces, handbags, scarves and a couple of characterful display accessories. Beautiful chaos still needs organisation.
Your market stall display checklist
- ☐ Sturdy clothes rail and suitable hangers
- ☐ Clean, prepared clothing
- ☐ Clear prices and signs
- ☐ Table covering, if needed
- ☐ Baskets or display accessories
- ☐ Mirror, if permitted
- ☐ Spare tags, tape and pen
- ☐ Bags for purchases
- ☐ Payment options and change
- ☐ Safe place for spare stock
Check what the event organiser supplies before buying equipment.
You don’t need to spend a fortune
The point of selling pre-loved clothes is to give them another life and, hopefully, make some money. It defeats the object if you spend a fortune on the stall. Borrow a rail, reuse baskets and print your own signs. You can upgrade later if you enjoy selling regularly. A brilliant display is about thoughtful presentation, not your budget.
